Slovenia - "The Green Heart of Europe"

It's hard to know where to start when talking about holidays to Slovenia. There is no other destination to compare it with! Its stunning beauty, picturesque lakes and dramatic mountain ranges, takes your breath away without you even realising it. Slovenia is proud to be the only country in Europe that combines the Alps, the Mediterranean, the Pannonian Plain and the Karst, giving it the opportunity to offer multiple holiday options.

Perfect for those whose idea of laying on a beach doing nothing is more of a nightmare than a dream, there is so much to do, see and explore in this magnificent and awe-inspiring country.

If you are looking for poetic and magical, try Lake Bled. Indisputably one of Europe's most beautiful lakes & mountains resorts, it has the benefits of dramatic scenery and impeccable weather. The famous Church of Assumption is located on the island in the middle of the lake, the Church was built around 1465, and was finished in its current style around 1747, the "Wishing Bell" in the church is said to make your wishes come true if you ring it and pay respects to the Virgin Mary, whom the Church was consecrated in honour of. Due to its spectacular location and outstanding natural beauty, many boutique hotels have taken the opportunity to provide affluent and comfortable accommodation on the lake side, Balkan Holidays offer four amazing hotels, all within 150 meters of the lake side, Hotel Golf, Hotel Park, Grand Hotel Toplice and Hotel Jelovica. And with many local restaurants, shops and taverns you can have everything you need, for a relaxing holiday, in one place. Make sure you try the local "Zlatarog" beer, which can be found in most cosy Slovenian pubs.

Set within the Triglav National Park with the Julian Alps as its backdrop, lies the beautiful lake resort of Lake Bohinj, Slovenia's largest glacial lake. When you're not enjoying the home comforts at one of our popular hotels such as the Hotel Jezero, why not take a cable car up to Mount Vogel and enjoy a picturesque view over the lake? Or head in to the National Park and see the Savica Waterfall, Slovenia's most famous waterfall. A short ride away is the First World War Military Cemetery, with a quaint chapel on site, with a memorial plaque commemorating the soldiers who fought in this region. This resort offers cultural history and relaxation in one place, perfect for those who love to explore natural wonders and become immersed in history.

In the north-western corner of Slovenia, very close to the Austrian and Italian borders, Kranjska Gora (pronounced Kran-ska Gor-ra) is usually famed as a popular winter resort, due to its proximity to The Alps, it annually hosts events in the Alpine Skiing World Cup. However, in recent years, more and more people flock to this mountainous resort in search of the countless adventures you can try, from an active holiday to a peaceful discovering of nature and cultural heritage. During the summer, Kranjska Gora offers many activities including hiking, free-riding, toboggan runs, kayaking, rafting, horse riding and even canyoning! And for the foodies among us, Kranjska Gora offers a fantastic variety of local delicacies and modern, international cuisine. A lot of the restaurants have an Italian and Austrian influence, mixed with regional Slovenian dishes, and make sure you take the chance to try some of the local, hand made brandies! Which are sure to tantalise the taste buds and maybe give a bit of Dutch courage for some of the activities available!

For those who love a good city break, then Ljubljana is where you need to be! The capital of Slovenia is by far one of the most up and coming city break destinations in Europe! Besides having everything that all the other modern capitals have, Ljubljana succeeded in maintaining the relaxed atmosphere of a small city. It offers plenty of opportunities for sightseeing as well as shopping, with sights such as the Ljubljana Castle, National Gallery and the Robba Fountain on your doorstep, this city is so culturally blessed that even the most intrepid explorer will struggle to fit it all in!
