This paradise on Earth has been subject to infernal disasters though. An earthquake in 1667, then the Yugoslav Wars both caused serious damages to the town. But the town got totally rebuilt after the quake, and they have also removed the marks of the war’s destruction. Recently, in August 2007, a serious wildfire was threatening the old town, but thanks to the efforts of fire crews, the fire caused damages to the outskirts of Dubrovnik only, where many holiday homes were destroyed.

Dubrovnik was founded in the 7th century under the name of Ragusa, belonging to the Byzantine Empire back then. Later it was “owned” by the Kingdom of Hungary, Venice, France then Yugoslavia. It has been part of Croatia since its independence.
Since 1950, in July and August of each year, the annual Dubrovnik Summer Festival takes place here. During the festival, holidaymakers can enjoy theatrical, folkloric and dance shows, (mainly classical) music concerts, ballet and opera performances. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival is considered the best and most representative summer cultural festival of Croatia. Some of the performances take place in special venues, such as in Fort Bokar or Fort Minceta.
